Background

Starting from the academic year of 2021-2022, Department of Mathematics (MATH), The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) offers a dual degree programme (DDP) together with Department of Mathematical Sciences, Tsinghua University (THU). Under this framework, students of this programme will obtain Bachelor degree of Science in Mathematics offered by CUHK and Bachelor degree of Science in Mathematics offered by THU upon completion of the graduation requirements of the concerned programmes.

THU has been a CUHK partner since 1985 and both universities have been involved in concerted efforts ranging from national research collaboration and joint research units to curriculum development and student exchange. Founded in 1911, THU is a comprehensive university and has consistently been regarded by most international university rankings as one of the top institutions in Asia. It is a member of China’s elite C9 league. Its faculty includes 51 members of Chinese Academy of Sciences and 39 members of Chinese Academy of Engineering. THU has a strong tradition in mathematics. The establishment of the Yau Mathematical Science Center makes it even one of the top school in the field worldwide.

Both the CUHK and THU Programmes focus on the study of fundamentals and applied mathematics. Students participating in the DDP will not only benefit from the strengths of the two programmes, enriching their training in Mathematics, but also widen their horizon through immersing in a different learning environment. Combining the strengths of the two programmes, students participating in the DDP will benefit from rigorous training in both pure and applied mathematics. That will significantly enhance the competitiveness of graduates from the proposed DDP. The DDP also helps students widen their horizon through immersing in a different learning environment.
