Applicable to students admitted to the CUHK in 2025-26 and afterwards
Last updated: July 2025.
The information on this page is applicable to students admitted to the CUHK in 2025-26 and afterwards.
If you already know what the Honours Courses are about (from academic counselling), and simply want to submit the application form for places in MATH1018 and MATH1028, click here.
What are the Honour Courses? What is their purpose?
- The Honours Courses are a group of MATH level-1000 and -2000 courses (with course code ending in `8' instead of `0'), at the core of the MATH curriculum, intended for mathematics-major students with good abilities, and with prospective further studies in mind.
- The Honours Courses are designed with the explicit purpose of preparing students who intend to acquire a wider and deeper understanding in mathematics, and who want to reap the full benefits of the Enrichment Stream.
Which Honour Courses are offered?
For the detail of the individual courses, refer to the CUSIS.
Course Code | Course Title | Term of study | Intended for |
---|---|---|---|
MATH1018 | Honours University Mathematics | Term 1 | First-Year students (`Freshmen') (Eligibility?) |
MATH1028 | Honours Essential Mathematical Methods | Term 1 | First-Year students (`Freshmen') (Eligibility?) |
MATH1038 | Honours Linear Algebra I | Term 2 | First-Year students (`Freshmen') (Eligibility?) |
MATH1098 | Honours Introduction to Set Theory | Term 2 | First-Year students (Eligibility?) |
MATH2018 | Honours Advanced Calculus I | Term 3 | Second-Year students |
MATH2028 | Honours Advanced Calculus II | Term 4 | Second-Year students |
MATH2048 | Honours Linear Algebra II | Term 3 | Second-Year students |
MATH2058 | Honours Mathematical Analysis I | Term 3 | Second-Year* students |
MATH2068 | Honours Mathematical Analysis II | Term 4 | Second-Year* students |
MATH2078 | Honours Algebraic Structures | Term 4 | Second-Year students |
(*): Students who intend to graduate with a double-stream made of the Enrichment Stream and some other stream may take these courses in the second or third year of study. For more detail on streams, consult the study scheme in CUSIS. A quick reference (though not necessarily most updated) on streams is available here.
Am I eligible for MATH1018, MATH1028 as a freshman?
You will be eligible for MATH1018, MATH1028 if you are a freshman and satisfy any one of these conditions:---

(**) What is listed here as 'pre-requisites' and 'co-requisites' is a simplified version relevant to students admitted to the CUHK through Enrichment Mathematics or Broadbase Science. For more detail on pre-requisites and co-requisites, consult the course catalogue in CUSIS. A quick reference (though not necessarily most updated) is available here.
How to apply for places in MATH1018, MATH1028?
Freshmen in the 'Enrichment Mathematics Programme' are automatically registered to these courses.
If you are a freshman admitted into the CUHK via the HKDSE or the Gaokao or the International GCE A-levels or the IB, and not an MIEG student, click this link.
- If you are an MIEG first-year student, the Department of Mathematics will inform you on course selection matters concerned with MATH1010/MATH1018 via email.
- Other students who are interested in these courses may contact us through email directly. (Here is the contact information.)
How to apply for places in other Honours Courses?
MATH1038, MATH1098.- MATH students registered in both MATH1018 and MATH1028 in the First Semester will be automatically and provisionally enrolled into respective dummy sections of MATH1030 and MATH1090 (whose timetable is identical to that for MATH1038 and MATH1098) towards the end of the First Semester.
- All students enrolled in these dummy sections are required to take appropriate action to adjust their CUSIS course record during Week 2, between Monday evening and Friday noon.
- Those who meet the respective pre-requisites for MATH1038, MATH1098 after the First Semester grade release may `migrate' to the respective classes through CUSIS.
- Those who meet the pre-requisite for MATH1030 but not MATH1038 after the First Semester grade release may `migrate' to some `real' MATH1030 section through CUSIS.
- Those who meet the pre-requisite for MATH1090 but not MATH1098 after the First Semester grade release may `migrate' to some `real' MATH1090 section through CUSIS.
- The dummy MATH1030, MATH1090 sections will be cancelled during Week 3. (Any student who is found inside the class lists of the dummy sections on Week 3 Monday will have the enrolment record automatically annulled and removed by the Department.)
- Other students may enrol through CUSIS after grade release in the beginning of the Second Semester.
- You may enrol for these courses through CUSIS in the normal way.
- To be announced in due course (likely in summer 2026).
