Announcement

  • Announcement of onine lectures

    •  To reduce the risk of spreading the novel coronavirus, lectures will be conducted online via ZOOM.
  • Homework 1 has been posted. It will be due on Feb 18 before 1159PM. Please submit your HW through Blackboard.
  • Arrangment of midterm examination

Until now, the possibility of resuming face-to-face lectures is still unknown. As such, we need to make suitable arrangements for our midterm examination as follows:

    1. Midterm exam will be held on March 19, 2021 (Friday).
    2. Midterm exam will be conducted online using "Blackboard" as a "take-home exam" with 24 hours limit. It will be available on March 19, 2021 at 10:00am and deadline for submission (via "Blackboard") is March 20 at 10:00am. It is expected that the paper can be finished within 3 hours. As such, the 24-hour limit should allow enough flexibility. LATE SUBMISSION WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.
    3. Midterm exam will cover materials from Lecture 1 to Lecture 7.
    4. Your submitted solution will be checked carefully to avoid plagiarism. Discussions amongst classmates are strictly prohibited. Related to this, please kindly be reminded of the following regulations enforced by the university:
"The Chinese University of Hong Kong places very high importance on honesty in academic work submitted by students, and adopts a policy of zero tolerance on cheating and plagiarism. Any related offence will lead to disciplinary action including termination of studies at the University. Although cases of cheating or plagiarism are rare at the University, everyone should make himself / herself familiar with the content of the following website:  http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/policy/academichonesty/ and thereby help avoid any practice that would not be acceptable."
    5. Arrangement of final examination will be announced later.
  • Homework 2 has been posted. It will be due on March 8 before 1159PM. Please submit your HW through Blackboard.
  • Announcement: New arrangment of Midterm

Based on our discussion in the last lecture, we will have our midterm exam on March 19 starting at 6pm.

    - Midterm exam will be conducted online using "Blackboard" as a "take-home exam" with 24 hours limit. It will be available on March 19, 2021 at 6:00pm and deadline for submission (via "Blackboard") is March 20 at 6:00pm. It is expected that the paper can be finished within 3 hours. As such, the 24-hour limit should allow enough flexibility. LATE SUBMISSION WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.
    - Midterm exam will cover materials from Lecture 1 to Lecture 7.

  • IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT Q3b OF MIDTERM

There is a missing piece of information in Q3b. epsilon_3 should satisfy epsilon_3 = (epsilon_1 + epsilon_2)/2. Please see the updated version of the question paper for details.

  • Special assigment (Due March 24 before 1159PM)

Why do we have this special assigmment?
There is a careless typos in Q3b of the midterm exam when defining V. But it is an interesting and important question that I do not want to remove it from the exam. For fairness, I am assigning a special homework, which is basically the correct version of Q3b. This "special assignment" will be due on March 24, before 1159PM. I am giving you guys more time to finish it, just to make sure it won't conflict with your work schedule or other course schedule. This special homework will account for 3% of your final grade (and the midterm will contribute 32%, originally 35%, of your final grade). Please submit your solution via the Blackboard system.
  • Arrangment of the final examination

    • The online final examination will be held on May 8 at 6pm. It will be due on May 9 before 6pm.
    • It is s a 24-hour examination. I will post the question paper (on Blackboard & course website) on May 8 at 6pm.
    • The exam can be finished within 3-4 hours. The 24-hour limit is just set to allow enough flexibility.
    • The coverage of the examination will be all the course materials after the midterm examination.
  • Typo in Question 1 of the Final Exam

In Q1, the condition that DFT(I)(0,2) \neq 0 is not valid. The second equality in the question should be: T_1(0,2) = 8/17. Please download refer to the updated pdf.
