New Wave Mathematics

Under the impact of new generations of computers, mathematics has undergone remarkable changes in the past twenty years. With the aid of computers, many lengthy and difficult calculations are now done within seconds. Moreover, by doing simulation, new theories have been observed, and more applications to other sciences, engineering, and business are discovered. Starting from 1994, our Department offers the stream of computational and applied mathematics to cater for the development in these areas. Also, a well-equipped mathematical computing laboratory is put into operation.

The New Wave Mathematics Lecture Series is a series of lectures organized by our Department to publicize the interesting topics of mathematics that are related to computation. Our aim is to let high school students to see and experience this marvellous development. The talks will report to the high school students in elementary terms on the recent advances of the beautiful interactions of mathematical theories and high speed computations and their important applications to the society.

The activities are designed for teachers and students of F.5 and above with knowledge of additional mathematics. They will be organized once every year and usually in late November. An announcement will be sent to your school in early October. We will appreciate that if you can inform your students about these events and organize the visit. For inquiry, please call Ms. Serena Yip at 2609-7729.
