Introduction

The Mathematics Department is located at the centre of the University at the Lady Shaw Building. It is a 3-storey building enclosing a peaceful garden and overseeing the Tolo Harbour.

The Department, though listed in the Faculty of Science, has applications extend to many other disciplines. It is devoted to teaching as well as research. Research areas of faculty members include Algebra, Analysis, Differential Equations, Geometry, Numerical Linear Algebra, Numerical Partial Differential Equations, Optimization, and Topology. These research contribute to cosmology, image processing, financial analysis, relativity, networking, and many other fields.

This is a department with a strong local identity and an international touch. Most faculty members grew up in Hong Kong and have developed their careers in the West. Among them, there is the world-renown mathematician, Prof. S.T. Yau (Fields Medalist, 1982, Crafoord Prize, 1994 and U.S. National Award, 1997).
