The Mathematics Department offers three different streams of study to cater for the needs of different students.
The streams are:
Mathematics -- You can choose any pure and applied math courses the Department offers.
Any student can choose to graduate in this stream.
Computational and Applied Mathematics -- From ecology to choreography,
mathematics spans all dimensions.
It is being used in image processing and option pricing, and it appears whenever we need to
quantify what we know or do not know. The computational and applied mathematics stream emphasizes
on computational techniques and applications of mathematics. Students in this stream are required
to take courses like Scientific Computing, Modelling, Numerical Analysis, Operations Research,
Game Theory, Stochastic Processes, Coding, Graph Theory and Financial Mathematics.
Enrichment Stream in Mathematics -- This stream caters for the students who has
good academic ability and who wish to develop their mathematics potential through a more
rigorous curriculum. Students in this stream will be better prepared to further their studies in graduate schools.
Summer Programmes:
Summer Projects -- For students who want to spend their summer studying,
the Department offers projects in pure or applied mathematics, either in research or in reviewing the
literature of an advanced topic. Each project, supervised by a faculty member of the Department, can
be taken by an individual student or a team of two students.
Summer Internship Programme -- It is aimed to provide the students a
head start in the development of their career. Each year in Spring, the Department will contact potential
employers who are interested in participating in the program. Competent students will be passed to
the potential employers for consideration. The potential employers will have a close look at the students,
assess their quality without having to make any long term commitment. In this way, both the potential employers
and the students benefit from this program. Previous internship opportunities include banks, commercial services,
financial institutes, and education sector.
Summer Overseas Exchanges -- The department supports students who are motivated
in advanced study to gain research and living experiences outside Hong Kong. Students may spend one to two
months doing research under supervision or participate in the National Summer School for Graduate Students
in China. Institutes for overseas research include Cornell University, UCLA, and Berkeley Lawrence National
Laboratory. The National Summer School is usually hosted by major universities in China.
