New

This is the first double degree programme at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and the programme is open for admission from the year 2006.

Shaping Your Future

Have you ever hoped for a university study that allows you to further your interest in mathematics and at the same time develop the skill for an industrial career? This enriched programme is perfect in making your wish come true. A student will receive TWO degrees in four years: BSc in Mathematics and BEng in Information Engineering. A Form-7 entrant may opt to graduate with either degree in just three years and move on to graduate studies or professional career.

Objectives

This programme aims at educating a new generation of information scientists. It enables students to develop in-depth mathematical thinking and solid engineering skills at the interface of mathematics and information technology. This programme is jointly offered by two top academic units in The Chinese University of Hong Kong - Department of Mathematics and Department of Information Engineering.

Career Prospects

The career prospects of graduates are very promising because of the unique combination of abstract mathematical thinking abilities and solid engineering know-how in tackling problems. Career opportunities cover a diversity of disciplines including:

  1. Research Studies - To pursue postgraduate studies in areas related to Mathematics and/or Information Engineering

  2. Information Analysis - To analyze and process information in quantifiable forms for the finance and banking industries

  3. Engineering - Engineering careers related to networking, security, and system management

  4. Consultancy - To offer advices to industrial or governmental clients on choosing the optimal strategies and technologies

  5. Education - To teach subjects related to mathematics and information technologies in secondary schools and also to make contribution to the IT development in schools

  6. General - To pursue a broad spectrum of professional careers that require the combination of logical thinking, analytical power, problem solving, and technology understanding

Admission

The programme is open for admission from the year of 2006, and the quota is 15. We expect to admit the best students who are interested in both the theoretic foundation and the industrial application of mathematics.

Students applying through JUPAS are expected to have the following results:
HKCEE -
Good grades in any two language subjects+
Good grades in Maths / Additional Maths

HKALE -
Grade E or above in AS Chin Lang & Culture+
Grade E or above in AS Use of English+
Good grade in AL Pure Maths+
Good grade(s) in one other AL science subject, or 2 AS science subjects

Curriculum

The curriculum stresses on deep understanding in both Mathematics and Information Engineering. The first two years cover subjects that are common to both disciplines. Afterwards a student chooses to specialize in either discipline or both. The curriculum also allows optional programmes such as overseas exchange and work study. A student is required to complete the first degree in normative length of study in order to pursue the second degree.

Tuition and Scholarship

The tuition fee for the Programme is the same as for a normal single-degree programme:

Students with outstanding admission grades will be awarded scholarships by the university and the two Departments. There are also plenty of scholarships available throughout the whole study period to cater for well performing students.

Research

This programme places strong emphasis on research and encourages independent studies under the supervision of professors from both Departments. Students who excel in their studies will have opportunities to take up research work at their second and third year of study. The research programme is steered by two of our world-renowned researchers, Professor Shing-Tung YAU (Fields Medalist) and Professor Andrew C. YAO (Turing Award Winner), who are keen in nurturing young scientists with background from both mathematics and engineering.
