Qualifications for Admission

In addition to the general qualifications required for admission to the Graduate School, applicants should have majored in Mathematics or related fields. Applicants may be required to attend an interview. Graduate Record Examination in Mathematics may also be required in some cases.

The Programme

This programme is research oriented.

The normative study period and minimum units requirement for students of different streams/stages are summarized below:

Course Requirement

Applicable to students in the M.Phil. stream and Ph.D. pre-candidacy status.

Lecture Courses
Each student must complete at least 15 units (5 courses) from MAT5011-5070, MAT6011-6142, of which:
(i) at least 3 units should be from courses coded MAT5011, 5031, 5051; and
(ii) at least 6 units should be from courses coded MAT5011, 5031, 5051, 6111, 6112, 6121, 6122.
Exemption may be granted by the Graduate Panel with the recommendation of the advisor.

Thesis Research Courses
Each student must register for a Thesis Research course every term.

Other Courses
Each student must take a minimum 6 units (twice) of MAT7010 (Graduate Seminar). Another 6 units (twice) of MAT7010 are required for each Ph.D. student in the post-candidacy status.

Ph.D. Candidacy Requirement

Each Ph.D. student is expected to fulfil all of the following candidacy requirements by 24 months before advancement to Ph.D. post-candidacy.

1. complete the course requirement as mentioned above;
2. pass at least two of the following written qualifying examinations in (i) Real Analysis, (ii) Complex Analysis, (iii) Abstract Algebra, (iv) Applied Mathematics. A Ph.D. student should pass the 2 papers before the end of the first year of study;
3. submit a research proposal endorsed by the supervisor or pass an oral examination.

Full-time: HK$42,100 per annum
Part-time: HK$21,050 per annum
